Acne is the most prevalent skin disorder today with nearly 60 million people affected in the United States and with teenagers accounting for the most, namely 85 percent. Given the high presence of acne, many companies have developed many acne treatments to both cure and prevent its recurrence. In addition, there are certain measures, which if taken will definitely help prevent and cure acne. Following is a list of some of the treatments that can be done at home with the help of acne products that are available over the counter.

  1. Using a mild cleanser without soap to wash your face regularly will help both clean your skin and prevent acne.
  2. Acne can be caused by touching your face too often and hence should be avoided, which I agree is very difficult, especially if you are in the habit of resting your face in your hands or touching your chin while contemplating. It is best to avoid because hands contain bacteria that cause acne.
  3. Never pick, squeeze or pierce a pimple or blackhead as this will only increase the infection and cause scars.
  4. Various gels and ointments that are available without prescription contain ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid, which are extremely useful. Benzoyl peroxide is best for removing P.acnes and reducing sebum secretion. Salicylic acid, resorcinol and sulphur destroy blackheads and whiteheads. Salicylic acid also helps in maintaining the cells lining the follicles in the oil glands. In addition, there are various antibiotic lotions and solutions that can be effectively used to cure acne.
  5. Using tea tree oil, which is an antibiotic, is an excellent treatment as it helps in drying skin and acts as an antibacterial agent and thereby removes all traces of P. acnes bacteria.
  6. Sulphur helps cure blemishes by unclogging the pores on the skin.
  7. Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids act as exfoliating agents and cure acne. For example, glycolic acid helps cure mild acne while mandelic acid reduces the presence of P. acnes. Mandelic acid being milder than glycolic acid is suitable for sensitive skin. It can treat mild acne independently and when used with other treatments, it can cure moderate acne also.

It should be noted that all the above treatments cure mild to moderate acne within 3-6 months. However, if you have a serious case of acne, then it is best to consult your doctor. Always consult your doctor before actually getting any acne treatment.
